"Innovative Thinking" A Newsletter from Innovative IT Consulting In This Issue

June 2009

This month we're changing the look of our newsletter in keeping with the new look of our web site. If you haven't already been to the NEW INNOVATIVE IT WEB SITE now is the time!

Last month we declared that THE GAME IS CHANGING signaling that the ERP marketplace is shifting, and so are we. This month's feature is titled EXCELLENCE DELIVERED. Why? Because EXCELLENCE IN ERP is much more than a tag line or marketing phrase for Innovative. It is a response to the changing conditions faced by clients. It is a PROMISE, a COMMITMENT, and a VISION of bringing value to clients.

Companies need more from ERP. It isn't enough for systems to work. They need to produce a significant return on investment, return on human capital, and return on focus - - all the things that successful implementation of ERP requires from an organization. Alas, the results all too frequently are underwhelming. The hoped for efficiencies never materialize, and companies end up with a slightly newer and in many cases, more complex mousetrap than when they started. THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE.

Transparency. It's not enough to have information in an ERP system. And it's not enough to say that we'll eventually get around to producing meaningful and insightful tools to drive decision making. Transparency - that ability to see "through" the process and into the business, is a requirement. Not just from the technical side - but from the business and user side as well.

Faster, better. It's not that your new ERP system needs to be faster and better, It has to enable your business and your processes to be faster and better. Oh yes, and more flexible too. Is there a theme emerging here? Absolutely! Expectations are rising. Companies need more than ERP Implemented. They need EXCELLENCE DELIVERED. Enter Innovative. More to come.

Last month I discussed the first chunk of work for implementing an ERP solution, the Design. This month I will continue with the second chunk, the Build.

Do Not Work in a “Black Box”. Although there are many technical activities that go on during this part of the implementation; configuration, coding, and hardware/software installation to name a few; it is not good practice to work in a “black box”. You had a core team of some of your best people from the business community working with you during the design phase and you should utilize their knowledge during the building chunk as well. There are several ways to work with them, but I will mention a couple.

Building Blocks Make Good Foundations. In today’s modern systems, with visual aids to help us build our solutions, it is easy to work in iterative cycles of building, reviewing, and modifying. Build a part of the solution and walk the appropriate team members through the process. Get their feedback immediately and use it to modify the original build. This has the added benefits of keeping the team engaged with the project and uncovering issues that may have been missed early in the project. Keep building on top of things in a logical way and keep showing it to the team in incremental parts.

“Talk” is Cheap? In this case it isn’t, but it is essential. It is easy to get caught up in the mechanics of the build chunk as a lot of the conversations can be deeply technical. However, it is very important to let people know where you are with things during the build cycle. Have regular update meetings with the entire core team whether they are part of the aforementioned walk through or not. Again, this has the added benefits of keeping the entire team engaged and revealing issues that were missed. And it is just as important to make sure you have regular high-level meetings with the corporate sponsors, too.

By the way, we used this iterative approach to build our new web site. Take a look at what we’ve done at www.innovativeitc.com and let us know what you think.
